Cop admits Tian could not have breached police cordon

Andrew Ong

Chief Inspector Sazali Ahmad told the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court today PKR information chief Tian Chua could not have entered Parliament compound to participate in a planned gathering on Dec 11 last year.

During cross-examination by Chua’s counsel Ranjit Singh, Sazali agreed that the accused could not have proceeded to Parliament because the car he was traveling was blocked.

Ranjit had suggested that the accused could not have gone to the Parliament compounds because reporters and police personnel had surrounded the car.

He also suggested that Sazali was armed and that there were further roadblocks and police personnel near the entrance to Parliament.

Chua was arrested on a bridge near the Parliament house en route to joining a Bersih delegation who attempted to hand a memorandum condemning amendments to the federal constitution.

A court order issued by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court a day before the planned gathering had barred people from attending the gathering.

If found guilty, he can be fined, jailed up to three years or both.

Earlier, Ranjit had asked Sazali to define his interpretation of the restricted area as mentioned in the court order.

Upon further questioning by Ranjit, Sazali agreed that the accused was arrested outside the restricted area.

The court then postponed the matter indefinitely after one and a half hours of hearing today. A new date had yet to be fixed.

The case is heard before magistrate Tasnim Abu Bakar.
